Why cork? I have always loved the idea of wedges but have also experienced some
of the disadvantages of these stylish beauties. Oftentimes I felt I had to pay
for stability by carrying around extra shoe weight. Needless to say this posed a
problem when I would walk far - the shape may have been great for walking longer
distances but my feet were just not strong enough to sustain the weight of bulky
wood or rubber wedges. When Cork shoes we introduced they solved this
immediately since they were lightweight without sacrificing any support or
durability.
Take a good look at the cork you pull out of your favorite bottle of wine. Press
down on it and you’ll see how incredibly strong it is for something that appears
so small and delicate. What is also so great about cork is that many consider it
to be a green material. Cork comes from the outer bark of the cork oak tree,
which grows back after it is removed. Think of it like shearing sheep – where
its wool grows back completely. When I’m at a fundraiser for an environmental
cause only my wedge cork shoes will do.
That doesn’t mean that I won’t pick up a pair of wedge shoes in another
material. Cork shoes may be best for standing out from the crowd at the busy
office picnic or walking from house party to house party in the Hamptons. But
every setting demands a different kind of heel and I do still enjoy my rubber
wedges in the rain or on the beach. Each special or casual occasion becomes
comfortable and enjoyable in my favorite wedge shoes. |
